Sometimes dyed and often little assumed, white hair has complexed generations of men and women around the world. The Paris Fashion Week in October 2022 will however have been marked by the appearance of an Andie Macdowell more beautiful than ever with its sensational gray hair. Balaying with a back of hand the idea that white hair is old -fashioned, the American actress has restored the image of pepper and salt hair. What encourage us to love our white hair.
So how and when do they appear? And above all, what to do to take care of it? Follow the leader !

Why does the hair become white?

If our hair is colorful, it is thanks to melanin, a pigment secreted by melanocytes (cells located at the root of the hair follicle and which color the hair as soon as it grows).

Over time, these cells are exhausted and the production of melanin decreases. The hair is not colored anymore and appears white. This natural phenomenon is called "cania".

However, the hair does not undergo this change at the same time, because each hair follicle works independently: some can therefore continue to produce melanin, while others no longer produce it. Result: hair that does not have a uniform color, since only one part of the hair is white (a few dispersed hair, whole locks, etc.). It is this slow evolution that can sometimes give the illusion of gray hair, but know it: Gray hair does not exist, they are either white or the same color as before. If the mixture may seem gray, it is only an optical effect!

What are the causes of the appearance of white hair?

The appearance of white hair is mainly age -related And generally occurs during quarantine. From this age, the rate of melanocytes decreases by 10 to 20% every 10 years, irreversibly.

However, this can also concern much younger people, often due to genetic factors or various pathologies. White hair can also suddenly appear after an emotional shock or an episode of intense stress.

Melanin production is also linked to our food, because certain deficiencies (zinc, copper, fatty acids or even vitamins B6 and B12) can speed up this process.

How to take care of white hair?

White hair is often finer, more porous and more brittle that naturally colored hair. Without melanin to protect them (especially UV rays), they are also more fragile than before. When they represent the majority of your hair, some new reflexes are essential.

1. Preserve their color

White hair may tend to yellow. To preserve their color, chamomile is your ally. Once a week, add 2 to 3 drops of macomilic chimile essential oil to your shampoo and leave to act for a few minutes. If your hair is completely white, rinse with lemon juice to let act for a quarter of an hour will get you out of pollution residues that can alter the color of your hair.

2. Make hydration

White hair is quite dry and therefore require in -depth hydration. Pamper them regularly with a mask rich in fatty acids: mix a very ripe avocado, 3 tablespoons of honey and an egg yolk. Apply this creamy dough on all your hair and cover it with a towel for 30 minutes. Do not hesitate to apply some beneficial oils for hair. If you really want to dye your hair, Favor natural colorings, less abrasive. Remember that by dyeing them, you may weaken them more ... So beware of this vicious circle!

3. Avoid deficiencies

We have seen it, Some food deficiencies accelerate whitening and weaken the hair. In case of deficiencies or from 35 years old, the ideal is to boost your nutrients to strengthen your health and your hair ... and delay the hair aging! Fighting foods rich in copper, in VItamines B12, in essential fatty acids, in zinc and in calcium.

Not easy to ensure a sufficient contribution of all these nutrients? Food supplements can help you, without any danger.

Our advice: Always favor natural supplementation and check the dosages to be sure to choose truly effective supplements!
