Happy aging, what is it?
It’s the hair that "takes a stroke of old", quite simply. Like the skin, the hair aging process begins early - around 30 or 35 years old - with first effects visible ten years later. If you notice around 45 or 50 years that your hair changes in appearance, it is normal and natural ... But that is nonetheless disturbing! For those who undergo these hair changes, the impact on morale and self -confidence can be important.
How is hair aging explains?
Over the years, the hair life cycle slows down. The hair follicles are less active, come back more slowly and fall faster. The scalp, too, is marked by time: microcirculation is lower, which stimulates the root of hair less.
Added to this phenomenon another reality: by advancing in age, the body is weakening. Hormonal upheavals, tobacco and pollution, food deficiencies, UV rays ... Over time, all these attacks can cause considerable damage to hair health, including a decrease in cell renewal ... and therefore hair growth!
Note also that the production of sebum and keratin decreases with age. Less well hydrated, the hair therefore becomes more rough, porous and brittle.
What are the signs of hair aging?
In addition to pushing slower and falling faster, It is above all the appearance of the hair that changes with the years. More fragile and brittle, they lose thickness and volume.
This loss of density of the hair is often the first sign that we notice: the scalp is more and more sparse, in particular on the top of the skull, and the hair fiber is much finer than before.
Another very usual symptom of hair aging is the change in color: due to a decrease in the secretion of melanin, The hair becomes gray or white.
The transformation of the color of the hair from their original color to gray is due to an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in hair particles, which discolors it from the inside.
There is an enzyme called Catalase which breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. However, as we age, Catalase production begins to decrease. The result leads to the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the body.
Catalase is not the only enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase, the main antioxidant of the organism produced by the liver, also converts water hydrogen peroxide. As with Catalase, glutathione production decreases with age and therefore the appearance of gray hair develops.
